A pet carrier is one of the safest and most convenient ways to transport cats, dogs, and other small animals. Although many pet owners allow their furry friends to roam free in their vehicles, this can easily result in injury to the pet, the distraction of the driver, or even a car accident.
Here are some tips for purchasing a pet carrier, whether it is for a quick trip to the vet or an extended flight to another country:
1. Purchase your pet carrier well in advance of your first trip so that your furry friend can get used to the sight, smell, and feel of it. Consider putting a favorite toy, blanket or treat inside the carrier to encourage exploration and comfort.
2. Select a carrier large enough that your pet should be able to stand, turn and stretch without having to crouch. If the crate will be used for long trips then it should be large enough to also accommodate bedding, food, and water.
3. Test the carrier’s structure before purchasing to ensure your pet will be secure and unable to escape. Fasteners should be secure, pressure points should be reinforced, and the carrier should be balanced.
4. If you plan to fly with your pet, check your selected airline’s policies regarding pet size, pet carrier, and where your pet can be while on the plane. If your pet can join you in the cabin, choose a soft carrier that fits under your seat. A hard crate is needed for pets traveling in the cargo area.
5. If you will not be flying, select whichever type of carrier is best for you and your pet. A soft carrier is easiest to carry and more durable than a cardboard carrier. A hard carrier is easier to clean and is more secure for heavy chewers and active dogs. Cardboard carriers are good for short trips but are less comfortable, well-ventilated, and durable than other carriers.
